{"id":135,"date":"2009-03-25T23:34:46","date_gmt":"2009-03-26T04:34:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bloodwitness.com\/?p=135"},"modified":"2009-03-25T23:38:44","modified_gmt":"2009-03-26T04:38:44","slug":"episode-6-and-the-story-of-siglers-syndrome","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bloodwitness.com\/?p=135","title":{"rendered":"Episode 6 and the Story Behind &#8220;Sigler&#8217;s Syndrome&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Episode 6 is now available.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a bit on the short side, but it packs a punch.<\/p>\n<p>When I first wrote this book I gave the Thompson&#8217;s infant a different disease, a real illness I thought required a blood exchange shortly after birth.\u00c2\u00a0 I later discovered that in the 80s, when the story takes place, transfusions weren&#8217;t used as treatment.\u00c2\u00a0 Getting trivial facts right is very important in fiction, otherwise the story is ruined for anyone who spots the mistake.\u00c2\u00a0 I searched for other illnesses (and they had to be genetic, so the parents knew it was coming) that would require a newborn to get blood transfusions, but couldn&#8217;t find one.\u00c2\u00a0 So I invented one, but was having trouble coming up with a good name for it.<\/p>\n<p>I had been listening to Scott Sigler&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottsigler.com\/node\/953\">&#8220;Infected.&#8221;<\/a> Scott used the names of well-known podcasters for past victims of his disease, and it brought a smile to my face every time he did it.\u00c2\u00a0 And considering that &#8220;Infected&#8221; (and the sequel, &#8220;Contagious&#8221;, which is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davehitt.com\/blog2\/congratulations-to-scott-sigler-on-becoming-a-nyt-best-seller-author\/\">New York Times Best Seller<\/a>) are about ghastly diseases, I thought naming the illness after him would be a great inside joke.\u00c2\u00a0 I sent him an e-mail asking permission and received a one word reply: &#8220;Cool!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And thus &#8220;Sigler&#8217;s Syndrome&#8221; was born.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Episode 6 is now available.\u00c2\u00a0 It&#8217;s a bit on the short side, but it packs a punch.
